The Benefits of Journalling

Journalling has many benefits and is something that I encourage people to participate in, not only at my workshops, but to establish it as part of their daily routine.  Along with a regular meditation practice, journalling is a wonderful way to clear an over-active mind and help put life into perspective.

Don’t worry, I can hear you saying “but I don’t have time to journal”.  I would like to suggest that in fact you do have time to journal.  For journaling need not take more than 10-15 minutes of your time every day.

Benefits of journalling:

  • Helps to consolidate ideas
  • Very useful to make notes after meditation
  • Slows a busy mind
  • Provides clarity
  • Helps us to untangle ourselves from the thought processes that do not serve us
  • Great tool to help you relax before bed time
  • Has been shown to improve sleep quality when done before bed
  • Makes daily life more manageable
  • Can improve creativity
  • Helps you clear mental and emotional blocks that are stopping you from moving towards your purpose

What should I write about?

You can journal about anything you like such as:

  • Reflecting on activities of the day
  • Reflecting on how you felt, thought and reacted throughout the day
  • Write poems, short stories, essays or dot points
  • Draw pictures or diagrams that mean something to you
  • Create lists of goals or intentions, or note down what you did today to move towards a goal
  • Write a personal mantra
  • Write a spiritual “to do” list (every Monday I will practice yoga postures for 20 minutes, every Tuesday I will meditate for 30 minutes… ) and tick them off as you go, making any notes or adjustments along the way.  If you didn’t do any of these items on your spiritual "to do" list, write about why you lost motivation and what would motivate you to begin again
  • I find incredible insights when I journal just after meditation - you will be amazed by some of the things you write about here when you re-read your notes a few weeks later.

You can of course use any notepad and pen.  But it can be seriously motivating to buy yourself a beautiful journal or notebook and a really good pen – writing in your journal will become such a pleasure.

Looking back over your journal weeks from now will provide you with many insights and surprises.  You will find that even in a short space of time you will have grown and changed in a positive direction.  You may find that you have written words with such deep understanding that you don't even know where they came from.  That is the power of journalling (and meditation).
