Slow Mindful YogaJul 20, 2021
When people say to me "oh I can't do yoga, I'm not flexible" I always tell them that flexibility is not a pre-requisite for yoga. Yoga is simply the breath and the body moving together, united. And when our focus is on the breath moving our body we are able to bring some stillness to the chattering mind.
Yoga should be slow, subtle and mindful. It is not a fitness craze, designer leggings, sweating it out in some ultra hot studio, or only for the young beautiful contortionist.
Yoga is for every single one of us. It is adaptable, changeable, suitable. Slow mindful yoga teaches you how to feel better in your body and mind, and subsequently, in your life.
It has taken me a long time to understand the benefits of slow and mindful yoga. The mainstream yoga industry paints a “no pain, no gain, only for the young and flexible” portrait of what yoga is. The more I learn and grow as a teacher, the more I understand that I need to do my bit to change the misinformed mindset about this beautiful spiritual practice that is yoga.
Initially I questioned how I could ever compete with these trendy young teachers, with all their social media followers, and their teaching gigs in trendy studios. Part of the reason it took me so long to even begin my teacher training was because I did not think I could fit into the ideal of this industry. Then I began to understand that these very thoughts are not “yogic”. There is little room for ego in true yogic living and as the years have progressed I have finally found my own magic – teaching a slow mindful practice to others who also honour and respect this style of teaching.
When you connect conscious deep breathing with asana (movement) you create space for change in your body and your mind. You learn to move in a different way that begins to change your posture. And when your posture changes then your beliefs start to shift. The more you practice yoga, and all it encompasses, you begin to remove mental, physical and emotional blocks. The new space you have created allows the breath to expand further, welcoming in the new and releasing that which no longer serves.
Slow mindful yoga:
- Regulates the nervous system
- Builds resilience
- Reduces inflammation
- Improves vagal tone
- Increases capacity for empathy
- Establishes new neural pathways
- Creates a deeper sense of self awareness.
It also helps to develop a sense of inner knowing and authenticity, allowing you to begin living in your truth.
